ShiaMatch.com is an online tool that is intended to help single Shia Muslims meet other Shia singles for marriage and lifelong companionship. The founders of ShiaMatch intended the site, in most cases, to complement and not necessarily replace the traditional methods of matchmaking within Islamic communities, by simply extending the available network of contacts through which the perfect marriage partner can be found.

Although available in all countries, the site is completely free outside of the US, UK or Canada, where a membership fee is charged. The precise reason for this is unclear, but one of the key elements of the ShiaMatch.com model is that all women, regardless of their country of origin, can join the site completely free of charge.

We are always a little concerned by such policies, as it suggests that the site has a significant imbalance in the gender distribution of members on the site, something that doesn’t make for a great experience for all concerned. Furthermore, such policies are generally associated with the "mail order bride" model of matrimonial services. This said, if you’re female and are thinking of giving the site a try, there’s absolutely nothing to stop you signing up to try it out, and then simply closing the account (with no financial penalty) if it’s not for you.

The site works in the same way as many other small-scale matrimonial sites, whereby you place a profile and can send requests to other users to provide their contact information. If successful, you can then contact the user outside of the website by email or phone, in the hope that from this contact, a relationship will grow.

Those with particular concerns about their personal security or privacy should not join ShiaMatch.com, as this is the only way in which you may contact each other as the site itself offers no internal email service or chat function.

In a similar theme of omissions, we couldn’t see any evidence that the site had any online customer or technical support, which may prove problematic if any difficulties are encountered. Furthermore, the site uses a rather dated credit card order form payment system which is certainly not the most secure form of payment.

Although ShiaMatch clearly suits a specific group of individuals who want to maintain as much similarity to regular matchmaking as possible, we don’t think the service provides enough to warrant paying for membership, even at the low price offered.

Users may be particularly concerned by having to disclose personal contact information early in correspondence with another member of the site, especially as this is the only way in which contact can be made.
